Team USA’s Junior Squad Closes Book on A Highly Successful World Championship Jul 15, 2012

  BARCELONA, Spain – The 1992 U.S. Olympic Team was heralded as one of the best American squads of all-time with 32 medals in tow from a memorable time in Barcelona. The 2012 U.S. team that competed in Barcelona at the IAAF World Junior Championships will go into the history books as one of the best American squads under the age of 20. With 20 medals, and an all-time record 188 points, the junior team captured some magic that was left from the Olympic team of 20 years ago.

Texas A&M's Olivia Ekpone claimed a silver medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships on Friday as she utilized a strong finish in the 200 meters to set a career best time of 23.15 seconds. (via )

LaFond Finishes 19th at World JuniorsMaryland rising sophomore earned trip to Spain   July 12, 2012   BARCELONA, Spain - Thea LaFond, a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, finished 19th in the women's triple jump qualifying rounds at the IAAF World Junior Championships.   LaFond had a mark of 41 feet, 6-1/2 inches in the qualifying rounds and did not move on as one of the top 12 athletes to the final. LaFond was competing for her native country of Dominica and qualified for the World Juniors after finishing second at the Central America, Carribean Championships.   She already ranks second on Maryland's all-time list in the women's triple jump. Her mark at the World Juniors was the fifth time she has gone better than 41 feet this season.   - Terps -

MileStat.com interviewed Kyle King while he is in Barcelona, Spain preparing for his race on Saturday in the 5000 meter run at the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships. King, a 2011 graduate of Grafton High School (Yorktown, Virginia), is coming off a strong finish to his freshmen year at the University of Virginia in which he broke 14 minutes for 5000 meters, became an All-ACC performer, and qualified for his first US international squad with a second place finish at the USATF Junior Nationals in the 5K. King speaks on his freshmen year for the Wahoos, mid-year transition with a change in coaches, and experience so far in Spain.

In three track event qualifying rounds, the U.S. advanced five of six to the next step while Team Co-Captain Gunnar Nixon continued his pursuit of the medal stand in the men’s decathlon.
